The City of Red Bay and Community Spirit Bank’s Weatherford Centre have been expressly chosen by the Alabama Humanities Foundation to host “The Way We Worked” as part of the Museum on Main Street project — a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations.

The Smithsonian exhibit includes 86 exceptional black and white and color photographs from the National Archives’ holdings spanning the years 1857 – 1987. Large photomurals, a video showing a variety of workplaces, and audio segments in which workers talk about their experiences on the job make “The Way We Worked” an environmental experience.

The exhibit will also allow visitors to experience Red Bay, Franklin County, and southern history through special local work and working companion exhibitions and programs.

“We so appreciate the consideration as a selected site to host the inaugural Alabama exhibit and are honored to have the Smithsonian coming to our ‘main stree,'” said Rosalyn Fabianke, Project Director of the local committee. “We look foreword with great anticipation to ‘The Way We Worked’ and this unique mission to engage, educate, and inspire. It allows us the opportunity to explore this fascinating aspect of our own region’s history as we rediscover its strength and spirit.”

“The Way We Worked” explores how work has become a central element in American culture. It traces the many changes that have affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years, including the growth of manufacturing and increasing use of technology. The exhibition draws from the National Archive’ rich collections.
