 JOB INFORMATION: The Tourist Promotion Representative – Welcome Center option is a permanent, full-time position with the Alabama Tourism Department. Position is located at the ARDMORE WELCOME CENTER I-65 SOUTH. This is specialized public information and public relations work involving promotion of the tourism and travel industries within the state. Employees promote travel and tourism through utilization of direct public contact and indirect marketing techniques. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • High school graduation or GED equivalent. • Two (2) years of experience in promotional work with local or state tourist or travel organizations; chambers of commerce; or radio, television, or newsprint OR two (2) years of experience in the hospitality industry. NOTES • Completion of three (3) college courses in public relations, speech, history (Alabama, U.S., and World), marketing, management, communications, geography, journalism or a related subject will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. • Applicants MUST list coursework on the application. • Examples of experience in the hospitality industry include, but are not limited to, work in restaurants, fast food establishments, hotels, resorts, and state and city parks.

Job Title: Communications Director
Reporting to: President
FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Purpose:
The Communications Director is responsible for developing, executing and evaluating the communications and marketing plan for Decatur Morgan County Tourism to promote tourism in Decatur and Morgan County. This position requires tact, diplomacy, and good judgment in making decisions that reflect upon the entire organization

General Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute the organization’s annual communications and marketing plan.
• Advise the President and Vice President on affordable and effective media buys.
• Identify research-based communication, advertising, and marketing strategies to reach the organization’s strategic goals.
• Serve as the communications partner with associated staff on a variety of initiatives identified by the President.
• Identify and respond to all advertising leads and visitors’ inquiries.
• Ensure database, contact list, and Visitors Registry Book are current and well-organized.
• Identify search engine optimizations and evaluate Google analytics to determine effectiveness of marketing efforts.
• Assemble information and respond to lead requests received as a result of advertising and leads generated through ABTT, ATC, and AMLA.
• Arrange for guided tours with media.
• Prepare and oversee any mass mailings, including press releases, invitations to events, and travel show leads.
• Work as part of a team to host and conduct FAM Tours for industry personnel and other groups.
• Maintain well-stocked inventory of registration supplies and equipment.
• Other duties as assigned by the President.

Brochures and Marketing Pieces
• Create and design brochures and new marketing pieces.
• Review marketing brochures on a periodic basis.
• Send brochures to ABTT, ATC, AMLA, Welcome Centers, Military bases, and other locations as requested.

Calendar of Events
• Maintain a master calendar of events, including all tournaments, special events and festivals in city and county.
• Prepare a monthly “Calendar of Events” which is mailed/e-mailed to community contacts along with a monthly letter from the Special Events and Sports Marketing Director.
• Maintain and organize a comprehensive file of all city and countywide events including point of contacts for events.
• Conduct follow-up at conclusion of events and festivals to record actual figures related to room nights and attendance numbers.
• Input all events into the ABTT calendar of Events
• Identify key Calendar of Events and post and submit local events as beneficial to the event/attraction/activity.

Digital Billboards
• Design digital billboards or coordinates the design of digital billboards for submission in a timely manner in advance of events.
• Identify other digital billboard advertising opportunities to support marketing efforts outside of Decatur and as part of a planned promotional program.

Newsletter
• Plan and produce a newsletter on a regularly-schedule, periodic basis and disseminate to e-mail distribution list.

Press Releases
• Establish media contact lists for both general and special interest press releases.
• Develop and prepare press releases for events at the direction of the President.
Social Media & Ambassador Program
• Work with the social media manager to expand the DMCT on-line presence through strategic, planned postings on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and other sources.
• Manage the #VisitDecaturAl Ambassadors program.

Travel Writers
• Build relationships with media sources to include regional and national tourism-based publications.
• Identify and provide story ideas to media sources and information on events.
• Work with travel writers, bloggers and other individuals to generate stories about Decatur and Morgan County.

Website
• Coordinate webpage maintenance on the three sites maintained by the DMCT (general web page and Hospitality Association.)
• Ensure website information is correct and up-to-date.
• Ensure that new and consistent information (news links, stories, events, photos, etc.) is posted regularly.
• Provide a monthly report to the President and Board on the effectiveness of the website.
• Weekly Blog posted to the website

Qualifications:
• Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.
• Experience in website management and social media platforms.
• Preferred Graphic Design experience.
• Previous experience in the tourism and hospitality industry is preferred.
• Ability to work independently and handle tasks of importance to the organization with little or no direction.
• Team player with the ability to work well with others.
• Self-motivated and the ability to multitask.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Microsoft Office Suite basic knowledge, including Word, Excel, email, and Publisher.

Work Requirements:
• This is a full-time position. Work will generally be performed in an office setting.
• This position requires the ability to work a varied schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• This position may require the ability to travel to attend trade shows, industry meetings, and other relevant events.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
• Willingness to participate in special training programs and classes as necessary to maintain credibility and to remain current on trends and issues in the tourism industry.
